The story behind the Excavations series

After my first sessions of psychological therapy, I found the experience so intense that the only way I could process it was through painting.

For some time, I had been wanting to return to the way I used to create: using art as a way to process life and find clarity. This felt like the right path back to that practice.

These paintings are about what happens when you allow yourself to dig deeper. Therapy asks you to excavate parts of yourself that may have been hidden, forgotten or avoided. It's not always comfortable. Sometimes it's messy, heavy and confronting. But it offers something beautiful in return: yourself — fuller, richer and more colourful than before.

As with much of my work, these paintings are a visual translation of my own experiences. What continues to fascinate me is how something deeply individual can still resonate with others. The details may differ, but the emotions often connect us in ways we don't always expect. There is always someone, somewhere, who understands.

I created these three paintings between mid-February and mid-April using acrylic paint on wooden panels. Two are presented in handmade frames that I stained by hand with a dark finish. It was a slow process, but an important one. I wanted the frames to hold the work in a way that allowed the colours to feel deeper, richer and more alive — much like the journey that inspired them.
